I don’t know how this didn’t hit big with the sports media when it came out a couple of years ago, but Patrick & Olbermann were on it yesterday. In 2003, the Asian edition of Time Magazine did a puff piece on Matsui as he was coming to America, and reported that:

“(Matsui’s) only eccentricity, if it can be called that, is his extensive private library of adult videos. His refreshing ability to laugh self-deprecatingly about his porno collection, reporters say, is one reason why fans and even nonfans have taken to him so much.”

Taking that into context, you’ve also go to love this line from later in the article: “Stepping out of the hot Florida sun into the first-base dugout, he wipes his meaty, calloused hands with a towel before offering a handshake.”

So, Japan is a nation where men are heralded for the size of their porn collection? I wonder if Matsui buys his porn like the average Japanese man on the street … from a vending machine.
