In a very deep draft for offensive linemen, Justin Blalock’s value depends on at what position each team is considering using the former Texas Longhorn. This 6′3, 330 pounder spent his college career anchoring their right tackle position, but it’s widely considered that Blalock projects better as an NFL guard.
Although he will probably end up being selected in the 2nd round only because the guard position is not one that teams use too many 1st round picks on, Blalock looks to be one of the most certain successful picks to be had in this year’s draft.

Blalock is smart. He entered UT with a 1280 SAT score. Blalock is experienced and durable. He was a four year starter with the Longhorns. Blalock is versatile. He’s got the experience at right tackle to play the position in the NFL, but also has the body-type and athleticism to be a very good guard.
ESPN’s draft profile says that Blalock “lacks ideal athleticism” but they may need to update that note. Watching this guy run at the Combine, he’s plenty athletic and showed up in good shape. Blalock also hit 40 reps on the bench press.
And just to prove how subjective all these ratings are: compare and contrast the Pro Football Weekly profile for Blalock with the ESPN one. PFW calls him “not nasty” and ESPN opens with “plays with a mean streak”.
The bottom line is Blalock is an athletically gifted, experienced, and tremendously smart lineman who’ll probably be in the Pro Bowl in a couple years.
