2007 | NFL Draft | Robert Meachem - WR

This was not supposed to be a very deep draft for wide receivers, but after Sunday’s workout, a number of names stepped up to stake their claim to the #2 spot behind superhuman Calvin Johnson.

One of those making their case is former Tennessee Volunteer Robert Meahem. Listed at 6-3, 211 pounds, Meachem ran a 4.39 forty yard dash on Sunday and even though I can’t find a published number for his inital 10 yard time to back this up, Meachem showed visually that he explodes out of his sets like few others that size can.
Meachem’s college stats aren’t strong at all, due in part to the quarterback issues they’ve had in Rocky Top over the last few years, but he was Erik Ainge’s favorite target this past season.
During an tv interview on Sunday, it was interesting to see Meachem display a little bit of his personality as well. Meachem is a very soft-spoken, but confident athlete who doesn’t seem like the kind who will cause any problems in the locker room.
WIth the long speed Meachem showed on Sunday, combined with the receiving skills he displayed during the gauntlet and other pass catching drills, Meachem has all the tools needed to be a top NFL receiver. He’s a big target, a relentless runner after the catch, and perhaps more importantly for a big WR making the jump to the pro level, Meachem is quick enough to gain separation in tight spaces.
