When Distant Tragedies Hit Close To Home

Despite the tragic loss of life at Virginia Tech on Monday, it’s sometimes easy to forget that the 32 lives that were taken leave ripples a lot wider than just their communities and their families.
One of the dead was Brian Bluhm, a prolific poster at a Detroit sports message board and a huge Tigers fan. There are some very touching tributes on the message board and the Tigers had a moment of silence for him and the other victims, which I thought was a nice touch (all MLB teams did the same last night, but the Tigers specifically mentioned Bluhm).
Curtis Granderson (who was his favorite Tiger) had an eloquent posting about it on his blog and talked about the tragedy after last night’s game.
I encourage any of you who are jaded about pro athletes thanks to the Tank Johnsons and Pac-Man Joneses of the world, to listen to that audio clip of Granderson talking about what his fans mean to him. It will renew your faith in what it means to root for a pro sports team.
