Gary Thorne’s wicked backtrack

So, Gary Thorne takes it all back. Though he certainly didn’t appear to be happy having to do so. And it sure seems like he believed it was paint on Schilling’s sock. I think it comes down to this: Gary Thorne is a square. He looks like a square, he talks like a square, and and he acts like a square. Squares don’t get jokes.
As anti-square advocate Kevin Millar indicated yesterday, the comments were probably something that was said when he, Doug, and Curt were naked in the shower joking around. A real square just doesn’t know how to react in those types of situations.
Boston.com has video of the Thorne apology on the front page of their sports section. And in case you missed it, here’s linkage to youtube for his original comments.
Kudos to Bob Raissman of The Daily News for recalling Gary Thorne’s days with the Mets. It was Thorne who called Bobby Valentine a “Teflon manager” five years ago when calling Mets games: “In September 2002, during a Mets-Phillies telecast, Thorne said there were ’some real problems’ between then-manager Bobby Valentine and his players. ‘There are a lot of guys down there (in the dugout) who don’t like him (Valentine). They don’t like playing for him. And if there has ever been a Teflon manager, he’s it. Nothing seems to stick. He’s never responsible for anything.’”
Valentine denied it all and said Thorne has never been in the clubhouse, so how would he know? Of course, I’m sure Thorne was way off-base with those comments, and it was pure coincidence that Valentine was fired after that season.
I will say this. For a square, Thorne says some interesting things.
