Let’s just say if you are a regular reader of si.com, you are hoping that Don Banks is coming to your favorite team’s training camp as opposed to Peter King. Why? Compare this (Banks) with this (King).

Banks:

“It’s Day 3 of the Michael Strahan watch and things are getting interesting in this little melodrama. I don’t believe that the Giants’ 35-year-old defensive end is seriously intent on retiring, because the man got killed in his recent divorce, and where else is he going to make $4 million in the second half of this year? But I do believe that Strahan has gotten his feelings hurt by New York’s refusal to even consider ripping up his contract and giving him something approaching his market value. And you know how myopic pro athletes can be once they get stuck on the “respect” issue.

Strahan is playing a game with New York right now, staying away and staging a very purposeful game of phone tag with Coughlin. But if he’s smart, he won’t push it too far, because the Giants aren’t in the mood to wait for him indefinitely. On Wednesday, ex-Bucs defensive end Simeon Rice will be in New York for a physical, and if his troublesome shoulder passes it, he could be in line to get a quick offer. That would be a real kick in the ego to Strahan, who has had a very public feud with his fellow pass rusher, dating back almost 10 years now.”

And that followed two pages of solid Giants analysis. I know more about the team now. I have learned something. Job well done.

King:

“I think it’s hard to come to this training camp and watch this team practice, and see the fans hang on every long spiral, without thinking: Wouldn’t it be great if the Browns started winning again? I can’t think of a town that deserves it more.”

and

“Owner Randy Lerner greeted me in the cafeteria at the Browns’ complex wearing a ‘Browns Backers of Sri Lanka’ T-shirt. They’re everywhere, those Browns fans. And I mean everywhere.”

And that was interspersed among blinding insight about the Browns like Brady Quinn needs to get in to camp soon to be a factor and Jamal Lewis wants to impress. I learned nothing. Job not well done. Although the skirt steak was apparently to die for.
