Mark Cuban is Al Czervik

I should begin writing the movie Batty Shack. Bud Selig could be Judge Smails absolutely refusing to allow a brash upstart membership into his club. For those of you that don't know, Mark Cuban began from humble beginnings and did not inherit great wealth.

He is a t-shirt wearing, blog writing, non-cliché speaking, innovative, ref yelling, Maverick. I cannot imagine that the exclusive club that is baseball owners will allow him admission regardless of his wealth.

Personally I think Cuban would be great for baseball. Not since Ted Turner tried to put the name Channel on Andy Messersmith's jersey (Andy's number was 17 which is now TBS) have we seen a rapscallion energy that this dying sport needs.

Baseball has changed dramatically since my youth. Free agency, agents themselves, personal trainers, roids, etc... Players are now traded the way we used to do with the baseball cards themselves. Too bad there are a few players we can't put in our bike spokes.

Hate him or love him Mark Cuban is truly an American icon of our day. Part PT Barnum, part Bill Veeck, part Bill Gates, he is exactly what baseball needs. But as often with baseball, they will refuse to see the forest for the trees.

As the popularity of baseball continues to wane, as ratings continue to slide, I imagine Bud Selig as Kevin Bacon at the end of Animal House, standing in the middle of the street during a riot, screaming: "ALL IS WELL. ALL IS WELL."

In January 2003, a group of sports-loving friends launched The Sports Frog. In the time since, we have become an oasis for intelligent sports discussion on the Web. That's right, we said oasis. If you are here for the first time be sure to swing by The Swamp and join the conversation.
