The Costas - Patrick Arnold interview
Originally aired on July 24, Bob Costas went in depth with Patrick Arnold - the key chemist and man behind "the clear" in the BALCO case.
Arnold comes across as very open and objective in the piece. He's on probation and home confinement after serving 3 months in a federal prison for his involvement in the case.
One of the more interesting parts of his interview are his views on when and why he felt uncomfortable with his involvement with enhancing certain athletes' performance. It's a very clear representation of a popular line of thinking that excludes morality from the debate. It's a state of operating under right and wrong, as only defined by law, and nothing else.
And nothing else seems to be more American these days than that. Not even baseball.
Watch part one of the interview below. Then continue onto part 2 here and part 3 of 3 here.
Then for a really good time, read Bonds' reaction to Costas and the interview.
