2007 NFL Preseason - Week Two - Everyone Hurts

Sunday night capped an injury filled weekend in the NFL.

In NBC’s Giants - Ravens game, Will Demps dislocated an elbow, Sam Madison left with a pulled hamstring, Samarie Rolle and Mark Clayton sprained ankles, Jeremy Shockey left the game with an apparent leg injury, Michael Jennings ruptured his achilles, and Steve Smith and Grey Ruegamer both took a concussion.

And that was just one game. Here’s a quick run down of just some of the names that were put out of action this weekend. Maybe the Bears and Colts should pass on tonight’s Monday Night game.

On the bright side, Donovan McNabb’s debut was a successful one. The fans fell silent on the first hit #5 took, and it wasn’t a pretty one. But Superman got back up and ended up witht 138 yards against the Panthers.

Some other notes from watching this weekend’s action:

  • That first half of the Browns - Lions game was one of the worst preseason halves ever to be played.
  • Titans corners look good, despite their loss of Pacman. Both Courtland Finnegan and Michael Griffin played well against the Patriots.
  • Want a real fantasy sleeper? Running Back Jesse Chatman used to be LT’s backup in San Diego before Michael Turner emerged. But Chatman is still a good back and is now in Miami with Cam Cameron. Rumors are floating that he could start over Ronnie Brown.
  • Lorenzo Booker, meanwhile, is still waiting for his chance to carry the ball for the first time.
  • Houston has a special player in rookie WR Jacoby Jones. Everything he’s been asked to do so far, he’s shined at. Look for Jones, a speedy 6-4, 210 receiver from Lane college, to be the one to finally take constant double coverages off of Andre Johnson.
  • Minnesota’s rookie WR Sidney Rice was supposed to be a typical Steve Spurrier SEC receiver who didn’t go over the middle well or have the route running to be a good NFLer. But Rice looked strong against the Jets.
  • Jets fans are already calling for Kellen Clemens over Chad Pennington, and while that day may come soon, the Jets playcalling this preseason sure hasn’t benefited Chad. They ran the ball on every Pennington play in their first preseason game and were predictable with him under center in their second game. Clemens, meanwhile, has seen lots of 4 and 5 wide packages, an up tempo offense, and extra benefit from the excellent depth the Jets have at WR.
  • The new Viagra sing-a-long commercial is worse than anything Enzyte’s Bob has ever done.
  • The Patriots helped write the blueprint over the weekend that will allow teams to frustate Vince Young in his second NFL season.
  • Eagles rookie RB and most recent Senior Bowl MVP Tony Hunt will probably score at least 7 TDs near the goal line this season. He’s a great, instinctive runner who’s the perfect compliment to Brian Westbrook.
  • Buffalo’s best QB option for opening day may not be J.P. Losman. Trent Edwards has been great. Poised, accurate, and productive. Everything Losman isn’t.
