Wicky Wacky Wildcard

The National League Wild Card is crazy. But for the Giants' inability to hold a lead, it would be a three-way tie for first this morning. As it stands, San Diego holds a one-game lead on both Philly and Colorado. And Arizona is only two games on the Padres, and the Mets are only two games up on the Phillies, so both of those teams could fall back into the Wild Card pictures. Heck, the Braves are still in it.

Throw in the Cubbies' two-game lead on the Brew Crew, and there are an insane amount of meaningful games right now in the Senior Circuit. Let's look at the remaining five days of the regular season, as far as the Wild Card is concerned:

San Diego: 1 game @SF, 4 @MIL
Philadelphia: 2 vs. ATL, 3 vs. WAS
Colorado: 2 @ LA, 3 vs. ARI
New York: 1 vs. WAS, 1 vs. STL, 3 vs. FLA
Arizona: 2 @ PIT, 3 @ COL

The Padres have the toughest row to hoe as far as opposing talent goes, but Manny Acta has these Nationals - winners of three straight - fired up to play the spoiler. This race is impossible to handicap, and a joy to watch.

In January 2003, a group of sports-loving friends launched The Sports Frog. In the time since, we have become an oasis for intelligent sports discussion on the Web. That's right, we said oasis. If you are here for the first time be sure to swing by The Swamp and join the conversation.
