The Plague of Cleveland

This is the type of game that people will remember for awhile. After all, it's not every baseball playoff game that you see swarms of insects surrounding the players on the field. And it happened in the biggest moment of Joba Chamberlain's career. Though he was clearly distracted and affected by the bugs, credit the big fella for not using it as an excuse:

"They were in front of my face, but I wasn't the only one who had to deal with it. They didn't show up just for me. You can look at it a million ways, but when you come down to it, we were in the loss column. And it's because I didn't do my job.''

He's right, of course. Fausto Carmona was lights out for Cleveland and handled the bugs with aplomb. Ryan Garko explains that he was able to do this because he's Dominican.

Bugs or no bugs, the biggest problem for the Yankees has been the most unlikely one: their bats have totally and completely disappeared.

In January 2003, a group of sports-loving friends launched The Sports Frog. In the time since, we have become an oasis for intelligent sports discussion on the Web. That's right, we said oasis. If you are here for the first time be sure to swing by The Swamp and join the conversation.
