Miguel Cabrera: Let the bidding begin
Attention Mr. Cashman and Mr. Epstein, please put together a package that includes starting pitching and a third baseman or centerfielder for the services of Miguel Cabrera. Please understand that you will be bidding against each other.
"As the general managers' meetings begin in Orlando, the Marlins are telling teams that Cabrera, 24, their four-time All-Star, is on the market and could be traded by December."
So, would the Yankees give up Wang and Melky for Miggy? Will that be enough? What about Wang, Melky and Kennedy for Miggy and Dontrelle? The Sox will no doubt shop either Ellsbury or Crisp, but will they throw Bucholz or Lester into the mix?
As for the rest of the baseball world, does Detroit have any more expendable arms? They're paying Brandon Inge a lot of dough to ride the pine, but they sure are loading up to take a shot. What about Kenny Williams in Chicago? Joe Crede's a nice start, but what about the arms? Would the Dodgers give up LaRoche and Meloan? In the Bay, would Sabean move Lincecum in a one-for-one deal?
The extra reason this makes me happy is because it is potentially bad news for A-Rod. Yes, he'll still get paid. Yes, it'll work out fine for him. But he can't be happy that there's another elite third baseman on the market right now. And one that's much younger and much cheaper.
