What You Missed Not Spending Four Hours Of Your Sunday Watching NASCAR (3/8 Edition)

–Kurt Busch’s utter domination. He led more laps today than he had led all 2008. That speaks to the type of season that Busch had in the blue deuce last year as 14 drivers led more laps than the 2004 Cup champ.
–Besides Busch’s domination, Atlanta was good for what’s bound to be one of the most bizarre moments that we’ll see in Sprint Cup in 2009. A crewman for Marcos Ambrose realized that a tire got away from the car during a pit stop, so he decided to chase after it as the tire rolled across the infield. As the field was still under green. NASCAR was forced to throw a caution to ensure that he made it back to his pit safely with the tire. Ambrose was penalized for the tire infraction, and the crewman was promptly suspended for the rest of the race.
–Another stupid Digger cartoon in which his possibly gay French F1 loving cousin came to visit Digger’s hole and proceeded to hate on NASCAR. Sound familiar?
–The blazing pace set by Busch in the opening laps along with the caution during pit stops for the crewman basically eliminated 25 drivers from contention on lap 65. Those that had been lapped by Busch and had just pitted were pinned two laps down, and cars that hadn’t been lapped but had pitted were trapped one lap down. At one point, only six cars were on the lead lap.
–Last spring’s race was infamous for the tire compound (although it was overshadowed by Indianapolis), and while Goodyear made some improvements to the tires for this year, drivers were still complaining that they didn’t have any grip. Jeff Gordon said that the tires lost grip after about a lap, but weren’t showing many signs of wear. NASCAR needed to work much closer with Goodyear in the development of this new car. Tires can’t keep being the storyline.
