Seattle Acquires Cory Redding And Pick For Julian Peterson

This is an absolute steal for Seattle.

The Seahawks were prepared to cut Peterson because of his contract–he’s owed approximately $25 million over the next five years–when suddenly Detroit stepped in and offered Cory Redding and a fifth round pick.

Sure, Redding’s deal is huge as well–he’s owed more money than Peterson–but this is a bizarre move for a franchise attempting to escape the Matt Millen shadow.

Peterson’s 31 and Redding’s 28 (29 in November), and defensive line has been a weakness for the Seahawks, especially at defensive tackle, so Redding fits perfectly. Peterson is a nice compliment to Ernie Sims on the other side, and Jordan Dizon has the potential to be a decent MLB, so Detroit now has the makings of a decent LB corps.

But still, what the hell? Was Detroit so sure that they couldn’t get Peterson to come to Detroit as a free agent that they felt compelled to give away a pretty good DL and a pick? Don’t get me wrong, Peterson WAS an All-Pro. But he isn’t anymore. And as everyone knows, the Lions have the #1 pick in the draft and word is that there’s a pretty good LB prospect that’s sure to be taken in the top five picks.

As a Chiefs fan, this is perfect. The Lions will take either Stafford or Jason Smith at #1, and the Rams will probably take Smith or Eugene Monroe at #2, allowing Aaron Curry to fall to the Chiefs at #3. If I was a Lions fan, I’d be wondering what the franchise was thinking, but at the same time, I may be so immune to these types of moves that I wouldn’t care anymore.
