Six Years and $63 Million Is Getting Popular

A day after Matt Cassel signed a six year $63 million deal with the Chiefs, Terrell Suggs signed a similar deal with the Ravens.

Cassel receives $28 mllion guaranteed and $40.5 million over the first three years of the contract. Suggs actually received more guaranteed money, $33.1 million, which will be paid over the first two seasons, and the first three seasons have a value of $43.4 million.

It’s a shrewd move by both teams, because the front-loading of the contracts allows for both the Ravens and the Chiefs to keep their players for the full length of the contracts, assuming that they maintain close to their current level of play. Add in the labor uncertainty and the current economic climate, and it is kind of surprising that more teams haven’t done this.
