The Tom Watson Thing

Took the lunch break yesterday to coincide with Tiger’s back nine. Oops. Got to the bar in time to see half of Scotland looking for an errant tee shot from him, and not finding it. Reminded me of me on a golf course, only no one helps to look for my wild shots. So, in quick order, it became apparent that it was not to be Tiger’s day.
And then, just a short time later, Tom Watson, shaking off a horrible first seven holes, when most began to confine him to the that-was-fun-on-Thursday portion of the tournament, pours home a looooonnng bird on 16 to get to within a shot of the lead. And then a bolt of lightning putt for bird on 18 of around 50 feet pours home and the nearly 60-year-old Watson was in the clubhouse at the halfway point tied for the lead.
Improbable. And damn fun.
No Woods, but a leaderboard with a real life ghost from golf’s past, and its crazy alchoholic court jester (John Daly) just five strokes back? Add in Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, and some other nice stories and it is plenty to draw attention, even in the puzzling absence of the best golfer most of us have ever seen.
