Epic in an it’s-early-August-and-these-teams-are-rivals-and-close-in-the-standings sense, the Yankees walk-off the Red Sox 2-0 with an Alex Rodriguez homerun in the 15th inning. AJ Burnett and Josh Beckett were nails starting for each team. So were the bullpens, until eventually the back of Boston’s blinked first.
The Yankees get to 67-42 with the win and are 4 1/2 up on the Sox. A few more outcomes like that this weekend and Boston will be firmly in Wild Card mode. Given the way the bullpens were used, CC Sabathia will earn some of his contrtact today if he can go deep in the afternoon matchup. Clay Bucholz is on his own…
