KU Needs To Fire The Mangino Soon

College Football

I realize that this is a pretty obvious statement, but I don’t understand why Lew Perkins and KU officials are taking so long in making the decision.

It’s obvious that The Mangino is gone from KU. It would be unprecedented treatment of a coach for a school to not support him in any of these allegations, yet keep the coach for the following season.

And since it’s a foregone conclusion, then Kansas needs to do this within the next 24 hours.

Why? Well, because Kansas–whether true or not–probably feels that they’re on the same level as Virginia. Yes, Virginia is going after Chris Peterson, but if they don’t get Peterson, they’re going to be going after the same names as Kansas, and Kansas can’t afford to be a couple of steps behind the Cavaliers.

I don’t envy whoever takes the Kansas job. The new coach’s salary will have to be competitive with what Mangino’s is, and with that salary comes the expectation of success, especially given the success of the basketball team. And let’s be honest, Kansas’s 2007 season is looking more and more like a fluke than a trend.

Kansas football will always be second fiddle to Kansas basketball–Hell, they couldn’t get people excited when the damn team was 5-0 to start the year–and while low level bowls are a consistent possibility, making Kansas a national contender in football is a pipe dream.
