Marquis Daniels’ Jesus piece is better than yours.

NBA

by garyclark on Sunday, February 21st, 2010 at 10:56am

In a strong move that has to make him the clear favorite to play the lead villain in the next Indiana Jones movie, Marquis Daniels decided to hire a Beverly Hills jeweler to make a three-pound gold statue of his head, and cover it with diamonds, to wear around his neck.

No word yet on how much it’s worth, or insured for – if it’s insurable (Dear Lloyd’s of London…) – but doesn’t this automatically become the #1 target of every amateur thief in the country?

Video of how it was made here. Hat tip to JE Skeets of Yahoo.

We all know about the Bears Super Bowl Shuffle, and some of us might even remember the  New England Patriots’ response. But how about this classic from the 1986 Washington Redskins.

Yes, that’s Gary Clark taking the mike with Darell Green. Yes, that’s Charles Mann doing a spin move. But unless you pay really close attention, you’ll miss the cameo of GOP President Michael Steele (30 second in, the fan in the stands with geeky glasses). Thanks, Redskins Blog.

David Stern’s ridiculous “gun” hypocrisy

NBA | - - - -

by garyclark on Saturday, January 30th, 2010 at 11:07am

The NBA is understandably sensitive about gun violence, given that two of its players recently brandished guns in a locker room. But they’re losing perspective, and coming across as unreasonable hypocrites. Months ago, Nike did a LeBron-Kobe print ad where Kobe says, “I’ll do whatever it takes to win games. I don’t leave anything in the chamber.”

The ad has been released, and the NBA is offended, releasing this statement: “We had no prior notice of this ad. We think it is inappropriate.”

Really? I mean, really? Are you even remotely serious? Because, if you are serious, you’re either a blind idiot (which we know Stern is not) or a massive hypocritical bully. You operate a sport where the entire dialect revolves around the word “shoot” and its variants. Shoot. Shot. Shot clock. Blocked shot. Shooting percentage. Three-point shot. Sharpshooter. Sniper. Rifleman. And you’re going to take offense at a shooting reference?

And don’t try to tell me Kobe agreed, so the NBA is correct. Of course Kobe agreed. He’s corporate. He knows this isn’t a battle worth wasting breath on, because he understands Stern is just doing this for PR. Something Kobe understands completely. But this is beyond stupid, and it should be called out as such. It’s Stern’s obsession over the public image of the league run amok.

If this is how you want to play it, Stern, then be consistent. Rename every aspect of the game. Change all of the NBA’s historical records. Take down the NBA.com website now until you can reconstruct it without any reference to shooting. Stop selling all books that use the term. Re-write them. Stop selling all DVDs. Re-dub them. Never replay any game on the NBA Network where any variation of the term is stated by an announcer or displayed on the screen.

And maybe, just maybe, start being consistent. As the AP article points out, just yesterday, Pacers coach Jim O’Brien said: “We did not have enough bullets in our gun to make games of it.” Stern, are you going to fine him? Call it inappropriate? Or is your paternalistic hypocrisy reserved for young black men?

This has got to stop (hockey’s BIG problem)

NHL

by garyclark on Monday, January 18th, 2010 at 07:17pm

(This post comes courtesy of Swamp superstar bapo!)

I’ve been a hockey fan forever. I love it for the same reasons that everybody else does — the speed, the skill, the grace, Ron Duguay’s hair, etc. — but lately I’ve been finding it harder and harder to defend. There’s nothing wrong with a hard-hitting game, as long as the hits are clean and meaningful, as long as the hits are used to separate a player from the puck, not the player’s head from his body.

The concussion problem is all the rage these days. Malcolm Gladwell is writing about it, Congress is capitalizing on it, Mike Leach is devising new treatment methods, and the NFL is taking steps to protect its players. People seem to be realizing that concussions are a serious issue and that big hits to the head shouldn’t be celebrated. (I don’t think that ESPN airs its “Jacked Up!” segment on Monday nights anymore.)

So, that’s progress. But in hockey, the culture of the game has to catch up. It’s great that injured players are going to receive better treatment, but they’re still getting injured at an alarming rate. In the NHL, we see replays a couple of times each week of borderline/dirty plays. It’s become commonplace. And the game at the lower levels is no better.

A couple of months ago, in an Ontario Hockey League game, Erie’s Michael Liambas tried to put Kitchener’s Ben Fanelli through the glass. Fanelli spent a few days in critical condition. He’s out of the hospital now, but he has no idea if he’ll ever play hockey again. Liambas (5 career goals, 357 penalty minutes) was suspended for the remainder of the season. I attended a game in Erie a couple of weeks later. First thing I saw when I walked in: an elderly woman wearing a Liambas jersey. Then I saw the autographed photos of Liambas at the souvenir stand. Before the game, a video tribute to Liambas aired, then Liambas walked out onto the ice and was mobbed by his teammates. Long, thunderous ovation from the Erie fans. I was a little ambivalent about the whole scene.

And then Patrice Cormier happened (link cotains graphic video footage). Cormier is a skilled player (2008 second-round pick of the New Jersey Devils) who already has a reputation for playing over the line. At the World Junior Championships a few weeks ago, he dished out two suspension-worthy elbows that did not actually result in a suspension. Yesterday, in a game in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, he lunged at Quebec’s Mikael Tam, hitting him in the face with his elbow. He wasn’t trying to slow Tam down. He wasn’t trying to separate him from the puck. No, he was trying to hurt him. Tam was knocked unconscious and went into convulsions. Early word is that he should be okay, though he’s missing a few teeth and had his jaw fractured. Cormier should be suspended for the rest of the season, but the QMJHL hasn’t announced its punishment yet.

The leagues, from the NHL to the minors to the juniors to the peewee level, need to address this. Occasionally, a Liambas or a Cormier will do something that is so ridiculously awful that he forces everybody to pay attention. But what about the elbows to the head that don’t result in a player convulsing on the ice? Is that just a part of the game? A high stick is called even if the guilty party did not intend to injure. But if Mike Richards knocks out David Booth? Well, Booth shouldn’t have been skating with his head down. (Booth has now missed 39 games for the Florida Panthers. Richards wasn’t even fined for his hit.)

The term “respect for the game” has been thrown around a lot the past few months. Players are so big and so fast, and a huge collision can happen on just about every shift. Lining people up, Scott Stevens-style, is an accepted part of the game now, with no regard for the health of the other player. I cringe when I see this because I can’t help but think of these players 20 or 30 years down the line. I love this sport, and I don’t want Patrice Cormier to be a part of it.

What exactly have we learned about the Marvin Harrison case?

NFL

by garyclark on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 at 04:26pm

Today, Deadspin has a piece from Jason Fagone, author of the GQ article on Marvin Harrison that is quite the hot topic of conversation in the sports world. The purpose of Fagone’s Deadspin follow-up is to add more pertinent information and answer some of his critics.

It seems like the GQ article has created two camps (which in itself is a testament to what an entertaining read it is). On the one hand, you have people who think this is an incredible eye-opening expose. On the other hand, you have folks who don’t see much new in terms of pertinent factual information. As usual, the reality is probably somewhere in the middle.

In part because the mainstream media did such a crap job of reporting on this incident when it broke, Fagone’s article in GQ scratched an itch for many sports fans who wondered whatever happened to this story. That’s one of the main reasons it has gotten so much play. In fact, the story’s buzz has been so great that the Philly DA just publicly committed to reviewing the case. You can call that a purely political move, but people have been thrown in jail and decisions overturned for lesser reasons.

Regardless of whether or not I believe Harrison is guilty of murder (FWIW, I’d be shocked if he wasn’t criminally responsible in some way in this case), both the GQ and Deadspin pieces bother me. The GQ piece leads with an extensive first-person account with known lies/inconsistencies presented as reality, and then spends an inordinate amount of space reminding us that Marvin Harrison’s father and relatives are all scumbags. This colors the article significantly against Harrison.

Fagone is a very, very good writer. Indeed, the way he opens the article reads like a scene out of The Wire. And that’s one of the reasons this bothers me so much. Fagone is incredibly one-sided in defending the alleged victims of Marvin Harrison, and in painting Harrison as guilty. In today’s Deadspin piece, Fagone’s inconsistencies and one-sidedness shine through again. Here are two inconsistencies:

- Fagone states that Nixon had “no dog in this fight.” But he clearly did. There is an incredible amount of money to be made in a civil case against a multi-millionaire like Marvin Harrison. Something Fagone very much recognizes a few paragraphs later when he alludes to the possibility that Nixon could be viewed as “a poor man suing a rich man for a piece of the rich man’s fortune.”

- Fagone makes the case that Harrison owned a serious handgun when he says “Whoever was carrying that gun on that Philadelphia block in April 2008 was perpetrating a highly unneighborly act, because, according to Tom Diaz of the Violence Policy Center, ‘It’s the kind of bullet that would go through walls.’” But two sentences earlier he writes: “Very few people would buy this gun for self defense because the wounds are less severe than most.” Whaa?

As for the one-sidedness, it’s borderline embarassing as he describes Dixon:

- “he was … a recent father of a one-year-old boy.” You know how many garbage fathers there are in this world? Tell me if he was married, or living with the kid, or paying child support on time, or show some sign that he was a good father.

- “According to his family, in the months before he was gunned down, Dixon was planning to take his boy to Disney World; he discussed the trip incessantly.” Wow. Really? He talked about taking his kid to Disney World? What a great guy! Three words: Talk. Is. Cheap. Especially from a person with a long rap sheet.

- “He was also putting in hours in a legitimate job at L.A. Fitness.” Oh. Nice. He got a legit  job. Did he stop dealing crack? Because, lest we forget, this is a drug dealer. Many drug dealers with a record have legit jobs. They keep the parole officer off your back. They can also be a great place to deal drugs.

- “‘He was turning himself around,’ his cousin told me. When I sat down with Dixon’s mother, Pearl Bronson, she was honest about her son’s troubles.’” Wait, how in the world do you know she was honest? You don’t. She admits her son wasn’t perfect (given his criminal track record as a drug dealer, she knows you know he wasn’t perfect), and everything else out of her mouth is true?

Underneath this one-sided reporting is a disturbing perspective and tone that comes very close to racism. Or if I’m being kind, a naivete. A black drug dealer from inner city Philly: has a kid and a job, and his family doesn’t hate him, so he must be turning his life around, right? I mean, are your expectations that low? Do you think the guy is going to walk around committing constant crimes?

I want to reiterate that I’m not defending Marvin Harrison’s innocence here. While it may not be (or maybe now it will be) provable in a court of law, I’d never bet against his participation in these crimes, at least indirectly. But there are a lot of things that Fagone glosses over in his coverage, such as the fact that Nixon lied more than once, and that no one else saw what he saw.

What Fagone has done is bring forth the testimony and perspective of a witness. That’s important. And it’s interesting. And I credit him for doing that in the GQ article. But his biases and inconsistencies are troubling. In my opinion, he seems to want Harrison to be guilty – that would certainly legitimize his article – and in doing so, creates huge blind spots for himself.

This is what Ochocinco does

NFL | - -

by garyclark on Saturday, December 19th, 2009 at 11:52am

I’m not sure there has ever been a pro athlete who has done what Chad Ochocinco is doing with his fans. And I don’t know why this doesn’t get more attention from the mainstream media. Here we have an elite athlete, a famous celebrity, a multi-millionaire who just wants to hang out with his fans.

Just random fans. Not groupies. Not at the club. But at bars and restaurants and … Starbucks. Cynics will say he’s overcompensating for something, or it’s another version of his egocentric self.

But can we please give the man some credit? Instead of charging fans for his autograph, he is buying them beer and lattes. With his touchdown celebrations and antics and changing his last name, I think most of us boxed him into the “typical selfish athlete” stereotype. The guy clearly has an ego, but I think he genuinely enjoys making others happy. This is not typical. And he doesn’t get nearly enough credit for it.

How does it work? Basically, if you follow him on Twitter, and he’s in your town, odds are you can hang out with him if you feel like it. Three hours ago, he posted this series on Twitter:

If someone does come ask the front desk to call my room and ill be down, we going to eat!! I’m hungry”

Cool folks are here, ill tweet where we are going to eat if you are an early bird like myseld come join us.”

We are all going to Dennys down the street, its n Miramar Rd., the only place open to eat this early.”

Then about an hour ago:

We all walked to StarBucks after breakfast-Slim in the picture too.”

Ochocinco has been doing these types of meet-ups for some time. But the strong theme in most of his recent posts is, unsurprisingly, Chris Henry. They were extremely close. And I find it fascinating that a pro athlete is dealing with the loss of a friend and a teammate largely through meeting up with strangers who also felt a connection to this person. It’s different. And I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but I think it’s important, and symbolic of a very new way we communicate and interact as humans in this country.

Yeah, it’s too soon.

by garyclark on Thursday, December 17th, 2009 at 10:09pm

I’m trying not to be high and mighty about this, but it’s somewhat depressing that there are some places in the blogosphere – places I enjoy from time to time – having fun with the death of another human being. Chris Henry did a lot of stupid things in public in his life. So yeah, easy target and all. But maybe, maybe, you lay off for awhile.

Not saying it wasn’t fair game to criticize what he did when alive. Not trying to make anyone feel bad retroactively. Not trying to paint a posthumous portrait of a saint. The man had issues, and probably demons.

But put me squarely in the camp of not joking about the fact that this kid doesn’t have a father anymore.
