Six Years and $63 Million Is Getting Popular

A day after Matt Cassel signed a six year $63 million deal with the Chiefs, Terrell Suggs signed a similar deal with the Ravens.

Cassel receives $28 mllion guaranteed and $40.5 million over the first three years of the contract. Suggs actually received more guaranteed money, $33.1 million, which will be paid over the first two seasons, and the first three seasons have a value of $43.4 million.

It’s a shrewd move by both teams, because the front-loading of the contracts allows for both the Ravens and the Chiefs to keep their players for the full length of the contracts, assuming that they maintain close to their current level of play. Add in the labor uncertainty and the current economic climate, and it is kind of surprising that more teams haven’t done this.

Is Champ Bailey Next?

Now that his brother has been shown the door in Denver?

Per Rotoworld:

Despite his offseason microfracture knee surgery, Bailey was thought to be guaranteed a spot after receiving a March roster bonus. The Broncos, flush with linebacker depth after moving to a 3-4 scheme, no longer had room to carry Champ’s injury-prone brother. Bailey is not yet recovered enough to practice and admitted he “still has some work to do” to get ready to play with another team.

The roster bonus in March is odd if they were going to cut him. If they figured they had to wait on Bailey’s knee to progress, they should have just cut him in March and then re-signed him in July.

But again, these are the Broncos. I never thought that I’d be saying I’m glad that the Broncos are in my team’s division.

More Proof That Plaxico Is Insane

plax

He wants to go to the Buccaneers.

Pssst, Plax. The Bucs are rebuilding. They just drafted a quarterback who is a “project” in the first round, released franchise icon Derrick Brooks, and have gone with a full-on youth movement.

You still want to do this?

But maybe the Buccaneers are the ones that are crazy. It’s noted that coach Raheem Morris acknowledged that Plax wanted to come to Tampa.

Raheem, why would you even consider this?

Plax is crazy, 31, has a history of not wanting to work out, and almost certainly isn’t worth a multi-year deal thanks to the delaying of his trial.

How does that fit into the current philosophy? Tampa isn’t going to be a contender this year, or even next, so this makes no sense for either side.

Of course, shooting yourself in the leg makes no sense either.
