College Basketball | Billy Gillespie - John Calipari

The worst kept secret indeed came to pass, and Gillespie doesn’t have to go home, but he can’t stay in Lexington anymore. The only details with Gillespie at this point are how much the settlment will be. It might have helped Gillespie’s cause if he had signed the original deal. Man, that guy plays by his own rules. Next time, sign the contract, dumbass.
Now what, UK?
The reader poll at the Lexington Herald narrowly would like to see John Calipari head north and east from Memphis. Memphis’ fans are not so down with that. Calipari insists Memphis is where he wants to be. Great. I’m still not holding my breath. It has been a really fun run in Memphis with Calipari, at some point, if he moves on, this will have been the golden years for the program.

College Basketball | Billy Gillespie - Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky falls to Notre Dame in the NIT quarterfinals, so no new banner to hang in Rupp to start next season…
So now what? I defy you to find anyone in the national chattering class who thinks Gillespie survives the coming week in Lexington. Assuming he’s gone, then what happens? Here are the moving pieces according to Gary Parrish on a local Memphis radio show yesterday afternoon:
—First look would likely be Billy Donovan, who, point in fact, didn’t turn down Kentucky for Florida a few years back, but rather to pursue the NBA. Which he subsequently turned down.
—Alabama wants VCU’s Anthony Grant, badly, but if he doesn’t take the job in the next 24 hours or so, it adds fuel to the fire that perhaps Donovan is interested in Lexington, as Grant may drag his feet vis a vis Alabama to see if Florida comes open.
—If Gillespie goes, and Donovan doesn’t come, then what? Well, Kentucky will be wanting to make a splash, so look for them to go after college basketball coaching royalty hard. Tom Izzo? See if Rick Pitino would come back? John Calipari? (Trust me, what is happening in Lexington has drawn a LOT of attention among Tigers fans this week…)
All options would be on the table.
This could be very fun to watch over the next few weeks.
