College Football | Brian Kelly - Butch Jones - Central Michigan - Notre Dame - Univ. of Cincinnati
by Memphis Bengal on Thursday, December 17th, 2009 at 06:14am
…whoever is hired to replace Butch Jones at Central Michigan. A weird circle of coaching life is underway between Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. The Bearcats took Brian Kelly from Central several years ago. Notre Dame took Brian Kelly from Cincinnati last week. The Bearcats replace Kelly with the guy who replaced Kelly at CMU. Which should mean when Kelly fails at Notre Dame, that Jones will be there to replace him around 2013 and the new UC coach will come from Central. Wash, rinse, repeat.
By the way, Paul Daugherty in the Cincinnati Enquirer writes the usual paint-by-numbers article decrying the lack of loyalty in college coaches as he looks back at Brian Kelly lighting out from UC for greener pastures. Unironically, apparently, since UC has just ripped its second coach from CMU in the last four years. Perhaps in Daugherty’s world it is only unfortunate when it happens to UC?
How about it just is what it is. College coaches being no different than anyone else in looking to improve their lot in life.
College Football | Kansas - Maryland - Notre Dame

Well, you’re ahead of the game if you’re not fat.
Charlie Weis and Notre Dame lost 33-30 in double overtime to Connecticut and probably should have lost the game in regulation. With 58 seconds left, running back Armando Allen took a swing pass from Jimmy Clausen and promptly fumbled, giving UConn the chance to win the game with a 37 yard field goal.
Instead, UConn missed, which only prolonged the “Charlie Weis’s job hangs in the balance” quotes.
The Fighting Friedgens of Maryland gave FSU a game, but a punt that was supposed to go out of bounds didn’t, setting up a 48 yard return by Greg Reid, which led to a three yard run for the winning touchdown for the Seminoles.
Maryland fell to 2-9.
(of course, given the way that Florida State has played, I’m convinced that Northwest Missouri State could give them a game at times)
And The Mangino–who I’ve already talked about–just had his game kick off, but his oversized letter jacket is a 27.5 point underdog to Texas.
(In the never-ending saga of The Mangino, there’s apparently a clause in his contract that gives him 21 days to appeal if he’s fired with cause before the end of his deal)
If only we had directed these three to the Swamp Weight Loss thread…
College Football | Northwestern - Notre Dame - Snaps
by Memphis Bengal on Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 06:47am
This quote from the lead in Stewart Mandel’s weekend college football thoughts wrap-up on si.com is a lot of fun. The quote is from Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald after knocking off top 10 and previously undefeated Iowa on a day where Notre Dame got schooled by Navy:
“Even though we’re similar academically, we’re in a little different boat as Stanford and Notre Dame,” said Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald. “We’ve been consistently winning since 1995. They’re still saying they can do it, but we’re doing it.”
That is one sweet snap. Apropos of nothing. Delightful. Charlie Weis:

College Football | Baseless Rumors - Notre Dame - Steve Spurrier - Urban Meyer
by Memphis Bengal on Sunday, May 17th, 2009 at 10:15am
Spurrier to southern talk show giant Paul Feinbaum earlier this week:
There’s a rumor that Urban is headed to Notre Dame.
Meyer to the Gainesville paper on Friday in response:
“I didn’t know what [Spurrier] was getting at,” Meyer said. “Here’s a quote for you – I am not going to Notre Dame. There’s gotta be something else going on in sports. Isn’t there car racing going on?
Actually, there was. But no way in hell it would have been as interesting as Meyer bolting to Notre Dame at this point in the off-season proceedings. Alas, just Steve Spurrier talking out of his ass. Plus, doesn’t Spurrier know that Meyer is, at the least, sticking around Gainesville this fall to try and beat Lane Kiffin and Tennessee by roughly 14 touchdowns?
