Duck Tales

Four Oregon football players have had trouble with the law in the offseason, and now wide receiver Jamere Holland is a former Oregon football player for reacting to Kristian Kiko Alonso’s DUI arrest on facebook.

It’s pretty obvious that Holland isn’t the brightest bulb based off of the postings to his facebook page, but what may be even dumber than the postings is the fact that Holland hasn’t locked down his facebook page since getting kicked off, letting anyone and everyone interested in what he had said easily find it. (You can make a convincing argument that he should have had his profile on private anyway)

Oregon AD Mike Bellotti was quoted as saying that Holland had many chances, so this was obviously the last straw. But multiple chances aside, he’s being stupid on facebook. As bad as that may reflect on Holland and the university, he’s not out possibly driving drunk or being accused of beating up his girlfriend.

It’s unknown what Holland’s past transgressions are, but if they were of the criminal nature, we’d probably already know about them. Therefore if LaMichael James and/or Alonso are found guilty and remain on the team, Bellotti and head coach Chip Kelly will have established a nice double standard.

(Of course, you can also argue that the double standard has already been set with the LeGarrette Blount incident, but I don’t want to break the site)

In Which LeGarrette Blount…

bad moves

…earns himself a season-long vacation.

Oregon acts swiftly and makes clear they will not participate in any excuses for what transpired after the Boise/Oregon game last night, giving the senior running back his walking papers from the playing field. He will get to remain with the program though, and retains his scholarship.

Instigation included, I was thinking suspension, but no argument that this was a fair outcome as well, given Blount’s history with the program and his general actions last night toward all involved.

Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount Makes a Bad Choice

punchy punch

If you have not seen it, head here to the Oregonian where it is front and center.

Blount is Oregon’s starting tailback, and, in response to what was clearly taunting from a Boise State player after the game, punched him in the jaw. In what can only be termed a sucker punch. The full Woody Hayes. And while leaving the field, it took a whole bunch of fellow Ducks players to keep Blount from going in the stands.

So, not a great scene, to say the least. Although not the end of the world, either. People tend to over-react to these things. That emotions were running high following a game between what feels like rivals at this point is not surprising. Or that Blount would react like that to provocation. I know he shouldn’t so react, but it is not completely unnatural, either.

Blount immediately apologized after the game, but it is too little too late. Frankly, the guy he sucker punched ought to apologize too, for instigating it. I have not seen that apology yet.

The Oregonian’s fine columnist John Canzano thinks Blount should be dismissed from the program (something which would also be the full Woody Hayes). He also thinks Blount should be arrested and charged with assault. From Canzano:

Forget that Oregon looked unprepared and confused against the Broncos on offense. Forget that the Ducks didn’t manage a first down until midway through the third quarter. Forget that it was the flattest football performance since BYU flattened Oregon 38-8 in the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl. The game was a waste of time, followed by a nationally televised melee courtesy of Blount. The player managed a clumsy, self-serving, “it will never happen again,” apology afterward. And the football becomes secondary today. Which is only to say Oregon compounds the ugly loss if it keeps Blount around a minute longer.

Turns out that you can ride your motorcycle without a helmet on the freeway in Idaho. And that you can outfit yourself in bright orange, walk outside your home here, and blend right in without a hitch. But what you can’t do under any circumstance is show up and strut around trash-talking when things don’t go your way, then start punching people because you’re frustrated and agonized. Will it never happen again? We’ll see. Right now, I can’t get the disgusting sight of Blount going berserk after the game out of my head. He finished the evening with eight carries for minus-five yards. Blount’s final rumble to the locker room, with all of those bodies tangled with his, unable to stop him, ends up the first time all evening the guy looked imposing. We waited all summer… for this?

As for Canzano wanting him gone from the program, I think that goes too far, but we’ll see how Oregon handles it.

Oh, the game?

Boise State 19. Oregon 8. Boise’s BCS hopes remain alive. Oregon moves over to the live-this-down side of the ledger.

The kind of funny thing? This was the first set of games with the NCAA’s rather lame you-must-shake-your-opponents-hands-before-the-game rule. So we have video before the game of an awkward handshake between the teams, and a near brawl after the game. Well done, NCAA. Get rid of the stupid before game handshake. It’s a dumb idea regardless.
